Apps, Apps, Apps…

Apps, it seems like everything is all about apps these days, and there is a reason why… It’s the newest most exciting market for developers and consumers alike. It’s a pipedream for startup and beginning developers as well as expert developers. Just about anyone can submit an app and within a few days be exposed to a global marketplace. From a consumer standpoint, most of these apps are available for free or at minimal costs and can be downloaded on the fly just about anywhere you are. (There are some obvious limitations to this.) App stores have revolutionized the way companies are doing business, how users are being entertained, and just about anything you can think of…”There’s an app for that.” For that very reason, the app offerings for a mobile device are arguably the most important facet of the decision in whether to buy an iPhone or a DROID, and thus our apps comparison.

Apps Comparison: Why Big Numbers Don’t Mean Better Apps

Currently the iPhone is by far the dominant force in the app industry because Apple was the first to market. They introduced the app store through iTunes on July 10, 2008. This advantage has provided them with now over 170,000 apps. The Android Marketplace on the other hand was not launched until October 22, 2008. While the Android Marketplace has seen a huge influx of new applications they are still only at around 38,000 apps as of Q1, 2010 according to Google’s “official” report.

Now, obviously it would appear that iPhone would be the best choice if you are in the market for the most apps, however don’t get caught up in the numbers just yet. One big thing to consider is the manner in which these apps are actually approved. Currently Apple has made it extremely easy for just about anyone to write and upload an app to the App Store via their proprietary, mature, and well polished set of tools; Xcode with the Cocoa Touch development environment and the iPhone SDK. For this reason a lot of the 170,000 apps that they have may not be exactly what most people would call “high quality.” On the other hand, the Android Marketplace is not much better as they have no moderation whatsoever for their developers. Apple took the approach of moderation before approval, whereas Google took the approach moderation by the user community. If a number of users complain about a given app, they will investigate. This opens the Android Marketplace up to a lot of scrutiny but then again has been very successful in making significant strides towards providing an ever increasing number of quality apps as well.

Apps Comparison: Operating Systems

Another key feature that could be the make or break decision regarding the apps is how those apps are actually handled by their respective operating systems. As mentioned in our software overview, the DROID and Android OS allow for multitasking and simultaneous apps to be run at the same time while Apple has taken a little different approach and only allows for one app to be run at a time (unless it’s a native and proprietary app such as Safari, iPod, or Mail). This key difference really could be the decision maker for most people. While the iPhone and App Store have almost 6 times as many apps, if you plan on trying to multitask on your iPhone and listen to Pandora for instance, it simply isn’t possible. However if you are using apps for DROID, you can listen to Pandora while surfing the web and updating your calendar and checking your mail if you want (as long as you aren’t using your phone. See our software article for more information on this).

So, to conclude our apps comparison, as you can see each platform offers their own respective advantages whether it be the largest number of apps available or the ability to multitask the apps that you have downloaded. As always the decision is going to come down to user preference and what makes the most sense to you.

So the Android(Google Android, Verizon Android, or Motorola Android whichever one you have or choose to call it) is a fairly new addition to the smartphone market. Blackberry, Wimo, and iPhone have all had a bit more time to work out the bugs in their respective phones, but the Android seems to be in catch up mode in regards to issues their users are having with their phones, and thus many Android complaints have begun to spring up. Below is list of some of the most common DROID complaints:

Most Common Android Complaints

Android Camera

– If their is one complaint that seems to come up over and over on Android forums, websites, and from people I know with the phone, it is the fact that the camera is pretty weak. Although almost every one of those same groups will agree that the video portion of the camera is fairly awesome and takes extremely good, high quality video. It’s the still camera that seems to be the big beef. Most people do not like the fact there are not enough options(effects/brightness/zoom) that allow you to take good pictures. In all honesty this is an issue with just about every smartphone. Most have apps you can download to add a “flash” or “zoom” but they aren’t really a flash or a zoom at all anyway, but rather do basic photoshop-like functions of zooming in on or brightening the actual picture/image you took, but not lighting an area before the picture or getting any closer to the object you are taking the picture of by virtue of a lens. Better phones, hopefully, will be something that ALL smartphones will add to future versions of their phones. For now though, Android users should be patient and realize that its not just their camera that takes poor quality pictures where you need full bright lighting in order to even see it, it’s everyone who has a smartphone.

Making and Answering calls on the Android

– Answering and or making calls on the Android can become a bit of a pain in the tail sometimes due to the same issue I have always had with smartphones, once they go black, you have to hit/slide the power button on them to turn them back on to make or answer a call. You get so used to either opening your phone to answer, or just pressing a button and talking, that having even one extra step in between there seems to be bothersome. On this point, there doesn’t seem to be much hope for change and seems to be just one of those things that may just take some getting used to, but really isn’t all that big of a deal once you are.

Android Battery Life

– You just charged your phone the night before, haven’t made all that many calls during the day and have only looked at a couple of web pages, a couple of emails, and a few videos on YouTube that you thought were funny. Now it isn’t even 6PM yet and already your DROID battery life is low and you need to charge it up again. Seriously it seems like it is some kind of conspiracy by smartphone makers to force you to buy a car charger for your phone. Or at least an extra wall charger so you can have one at work. Smartphone batteries are not the greatest no matter which phone you have. Ask anyone. However, you have to keep in mind that although you may not make it through any given day without needing to re-charge that old power sucker, it has allowed you to do things that you cannot do with other phones(surf the net, run apps, email, etc.). That battery, although it may not last forever, has in fact been powering a LOT of different things on your phone which do require it to work a littler harder than most. Some ideas for how to deal with it are keeping an extra wall charger or car charger at work or in your car as I said earlier seem to be the best options. Other people I know have actually gone to the trouble of keeping spare pre-charged extra cell phone batteries with them to be sure that they always have power when they need it. Bear with them on this one too, I am certain that the longer people keep complaining about constantly having to charge their phones, the makers behind this “smart” phone technology will eventually wise up, and get a battery that is still lightweight, but stays charged for a longer amount of time.

Android Market Doesn’t Have Enough Apps

– This is a time issue once again mostly, as Android has a lot of catching up to do with the iPhone in this area since it was released so much later. At last count the Android Market has around 35,000 available apps to download, while iPhone’s App Store has somewhere over 200,000 (see ouriPhone and DROID Apps comparison for more info). That is quite a big discrepancy, however, you have to keep in mind that quantity does not necessarily mean better quality! In fact, most Android users I know have said that they have found similar or even better apps on the Android than they had on there iPhone. It may take a little more refined searching, or a little extra review reading on the apps themselves, but if you look it’s probably there. There are not as many apps yet though, that is a fact, no way around it.

Android Keyboard

– Having problems with Android’s keyboard is one that really baffles me. The iPhone keyboard had the same hurdle to overcome when it introduced its touch screen format. People who were used to having a keyboard hated not having one. Now it seems like as people got used to the touchscreen keyboard, they do not like having a keypad keyboard. Android has a keypad keyboard because it does differentiate it from iPhone in that respect, and because there are apps that you can download to have a touchscreen keyboard, the DROID keyboard offers the best of both worlds. Another issue with the keyboard on DROID that I’ve come across is that at times there is a long delay between what you type and when it is displayed on your screen. This may be a sign of a more technical issue with your phone and in order to correct this, you may need to take it to where you bought your phone and have them service it.

Android is Awkward and Uncomfortable to Hold

– Many people do not like the box shape of the DROID, and tend to believe that is a bit heavy and clunky. It has also been said that having the power button on the top of the phone is not very intuitive either. Although the Android is a bit bulky, a lot of that is due to the keyboard. As is the extra weight as well. For smartphone users who prefer to have the external keyboard, these are both issues that you are sacrificing for that option. As for the power button on top, if it really bothers you too much, when you choose your next phone, do a little more hands on reviewing of it before purchasing so that you can understand it better next time. Or visit sites like this one where you can read reviews, join forums, buy extras, or get the latest news on particular phones.

Android Complaints Summarized

DROID complaints as you can see can vary slightly from other phones, but for the most part, the main complaints that users have with them are very similar to all other smartphones. In fact, although I’m sure they will also rise given a little more time on the market, there are fewer DROID complaint sites than there are for other phones in the category. As newer models come forth, the Android Market increases its amount of apps, and the bugs in the operating systems are tweaked, the DROID seems primed to become one of the “smartest” phones available!

If you would like to add a comment on this page, or add a complaint that you have for DROID phones, please do so below. Also, please feel free to share this article with any one else you know that is looking to buy a DROID, or already has one. We would appreciate the added comments or complaints that they could share so that we can make as comprehensive a list as possible of all the different issues users may be having, or wanting to know if they will have, with Android phones.

We had such great success with our article comparing the iPhone 4 vs DROID Incredible that we decided to continue the debate by adding another device into the mix. This time, we think its a little better match up with plenty to debate and discuss. The article that we published Monday regarding the iPhone 4 and the DROID Incredible started some pretty heated debates in our comments section so we are hoping to have similar results and see what everyone has to say about this match up. We hope you enjoy!

iPhone 4 vs HTC EVO 4G

There is no doubt with Android laying claim to more and more market share that Apple needed to take some drastic steps when introducing their next version of the iPhone, the iPhone 4. Monday when Steve Jobs announced the new device, it came as little surprise that exactly that happened. The device is simply stunning, however just because it possesses curb appeal and an Apple logo doesn’t necessarily instantly win over many users and there are several pitfalls associated with the device. The most notable, it’s restricted carrier. With more and more complaints with AT&T’s service the iPhone has seen a decline in market share to its emerging competition the Android based phones, who allow for unrestricted usage on multiple networks and also multiple different phones. The one this article will detail is the HTC EVO, probably the iPhone’s most notable adversary to date. While the DROID and DROID Incredible did an excellent job of getting the name out there through various advertising attacks on the iPhone their biggest success was getting Google’s Android OS more publicity and now with the OS being used on multiple phones its popularity is all the more ever increasing. The new HTC EVO is the most recent release which will definitely give the iPhone 4 a run for its money. Especially considering the new carrier that is hosting the device, Sprint, has the worlds only 4G network. Below we are going to outline these differences as well as many others and compare the two devices spec for spec to give you, the users, the full scoop on each of these precisely crafted smartphones.

Cosmetics

Apple is of course known for their sleek designs and the iPhone 4 isn’t going to be the exception. The new phone comes with a stainless steel band that couples as the iPhone 4 antenna and is engineered to be 4 times stronger than steel and allows for the extra thin and rigid design. In addition to the stainless steel band, both the front and back are made with engineered aluminosilcate glass (the same stuff used in high speed trains and helicopters). The glass is designed to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times stronger than plastic. Also it’s extremely durable.

In comparison, the HTC EVO, sports a sleek black plastic casing and because the device has such a large display, they even felt it necessary to give this monster a kickstand. From a strictly user driven perspective, this device clearly has curb appeal and has a gorgeous display (more details on this later). It was crafted beautifully and certainly won’t be an eyesore for any user.

Size and Weight (Dimensions)

The new iPhone 4G weighs in at 4.8 ounces (137 grams) and measures 4.5 inches (H) by 2.31 inches (W) by 0.37 inches (D). The HTC EVO comparably weighs in 6 ounces (170 grams) and measures 4.8 inches (H) by 2.6 inches (W) by 0.5 inches (D). As you can see the differences here are pretty noticeable. The reason for this is the HTC EVO’s monstrous display. The iPhone 4G dimensions differ nearly in every aspect, which may be a good thing for some users who aren’t looking to carry around a mini computer in their pocket. In this case the iPhone 4 has combined form with function and tried to strike a perfect blend of both size and functionality. However, in any case, there are always going to be users out there that want the big guy and that’s what the HTC EVO is. While it’s slightly heavier and larger, it still will fit in a pocket and provides the same form and function that the iPhone 4 provides with a slightly larger ego.

If size and weight are a deciding factor for you, this will obviously be a user preference.

Cellular Carriers and Wireless

As expected the iPhone 4 will continue it’s relationship with AT&T and will operate on their GSM/EDGE Network while the HTC EVO operates on the only 4G network (CMDA), the Sprint network. For most this is going to be the major purchasing point. There are countless issues that have arisen as a result of data hungry users on the AT&T network and they simply haven’t been able to keep up. In addition their 3G coverage is spotty at best and frequent dropped calls are almost a given. While this may seem like an obvious hitch, AT&T has promised to improve their networks and have been working diligently in association with Apple to do so and have even introduced caps on certain users who are abusing data usage, though I feel that if it is offered you should be able to use as much as you want. However, all the same, the Sprint network doesn’t seem to have these problems and probably won’t in the foreseeable future. In addition to this, they offer the worlds only 4G network, which claims speeds up to 10x faster than AT&T’s current 3G speeds. (Industry standards present 3G average speeds at 600Kbps – 1.7Mbps and 4G average speeds at 3 – 6 Mbps)

The network that carries these two phones will probably be the decisive factor over every other thing discussed between the two phones so I don’t want to dwell to heavily upon this characteristic. If you would like to get details on which carrier to go with and who will be the better fit for you, please visit their corresponding websites:

AT&T

Sprint

As for wireless capabilities both the iPhone 4 and HTC EVO offer 802.11 b/g, however the iPhone 4 also supports wireless 802.11 n. Additionally each also offer Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and I believe the new iPhone 4G is going to offer wireless tethering via the OS 4 release which will allow for automatic syncing much like the MacBook’s and other current Apple devices.

Location Services

The iPhone 3GS previously offered maps and directions via Google Maps through a proprietary app, but with the release of the iPhone 4G they will now have assisted GPS and also their all important standard “digital compass,” which, in my opinion is probably the most useless item on the entire phone. Also, as before the location services will be performed via wi-fi and cellular triangulation. As for the HTC EVO, they will be offering Google Maps with GPS Navigation. There is not a huge difference here between the two but it would appear that the Android compatible HTC EVO may have slightly better offerings as it is coupled directly with Google’s navigation services and their support will be a decisive advantage for not only the DROID Incredible but all phones taking advantage of the Android OS.

In addition to this, with the HTC EVO’s kickstand and huge display, turn by turn navigation should be a snap if you are comfortable with sitting your phone on your dash or purchasing one of the available holders to mount it. Either way, if you go with the iPhone 4 or the HTC EVO I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with their navigation services.

Power and Battery

The iPhone 4G will come equipped with a built in rechargeable lithium ion battery. The battery can be recharged via USB connection to a computer or the standard power adapter unit. The HTC EVO also comes equipped with a rechargeable lithium ion battery that can be charged in the same way. The big difference you’ll see here is that the HTC EVO battery is removable and therefore exchangeable in the event one battery goes out and you have a secondary. This shouldn’t really be a huge concern unless you plan on going on a camping trip or somewhere where you are likely to not have access to a power grid. In which case, I doubt you are going to need your cell phone anyway.

With regards to talk time, standby and usage times, the iPhone 4 offers a whopping 7 hours of talk time on 3G and 14 hours on 2G with standby time of up to 300 hours. In terms of internet usage, that means you can surf comfortably for around 6 hours on 3G and 10 hours via a Wi-Fi connection. For those video and audio hungry users, you can enjoy up to 10 hours of video playback and 40 hours of your favorite music.

In comparison, although the HTC EVO’s specs weren’t officially given, estimates calculate that the HTC EVO can only offer up to 6 hours of talk time and I’ve heard around 7 days of standby time but I can’t be 100% sure of this. Unfortunately without knowing for sure I can’t say exactly which battery is better, but I would assume that the iPhone 4 with its more advanced and larger battery would be the winner. For most users who plug in their device every night anyway, this doesn’t become a huge issue anyway though. For the power hungry and media intensive users however, the iPhone 4 may be the best option.

Capacity (Memory and Storage)

Although the new iPhone 4G was expected to provide up to 64GB of internal memory, the actual spec came out to be the same as the iPhone 3GS upscale model at 32GB of total internal memory. They also offer a 16GB version much like was previously offered when the 3GS entered the market. By comparison the HTC EVO offers a measly 1GB of internal memory. However, to counteract this obviously small internal memory they do allow for expansion capability of up to 32 GB via a mircoSD card for a total 33GB of storage. This may not seem like an overly large difference until you consider the fact that you cannot store apps on the 32GB of external memory. (See our iPhone DROID Hardware Comparison article for more details.)

With regards to memory, if you plan on downloading large numbers of apps, the iPhone 4 is the obvious better option, however if most of your memory usage will be for photos, video, and music the HTC EVO may offer a substantially better option because users would be able to swap microSD cards for each of the above mediums depending on what they needed at the time. For most users having to deal with purchasing an additional memory card and keep track of it may just be too much of a hassle. Especially considering the starting price tag for the EVO is higher than that of the iPhone 4 and requiring additional purchases just to increase memory seems a bit much to ask.

Display

Now is where we really start to notice some BIG differences. Up until this point, the two phones have been relatively evenly matched with minimal differences here and there, but Apple really went the extra mile with their new display. The 3.5 inch retina display that they offer has a huge 960 x 640 pixel resolution with 326 ppi. The HTC EVO by comparison offers a monstrous 4.3 inch screen but with pixel resolution of only 800 x 480. While the HTC EVO obviously wins the size differential the quality of the display is much better on the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4 offers 614,400 total pixels in it’s 3.5 inch display while the HTC EVO only provides about half that much in its 4.3 inch display at 384,400. This is a huge advantage for the iPhone 4 in terms of pixel quality, but to most users the larger screen size may be an overbearing perk that negates the better quality of the smaller iPhone 4 screen. In addition to the better pixel ratio’s the iPhone 4G also offers a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating on not only the front screen, but the back of the device as well. The contrast for the device is also significantly better at 800:1. All in all, this really will all come down to quantity over quality and which the user prefers.

Camera, Video, and Photos

The iPhone 4 made a huge improvement on its camera capabilities not only for photos but for video as well. The new iPhone 4 will be equipped with a 5-megapixel backside still camera capable of recording HD quality video’s at 720p with up to 30 frames per second with audio. Additionally the backside camera also offers an LED flash. The HTC EVO offers a slightly better 8-megapixel backside camera that also supports autofocus and 720p video recording with a dual LED flash instead of just a single, but only supports 25 frames per second in comparison to the iPhone 4′s 30. This isn’t a staggering difference but given the HTC EVO’s dual LED flash it’s likely going to take the better nigh time photos while the iPhone 4 will record better 720p video with its 30 fps.

Additionally, both devices have the exact same 1.3-megapixel VGA frontside camera for video conferencing capabilities though each require slightly different software packages to use this feature. The HTC EVO is compatible with video chat apps like Qik Live and Fring, while the iPhone 4 will make use of FaceTime. The main difference you’ll see with the video chat is due to Sprint’s 4G network capabilities the video conferencing can be done anytime anywhere that 4G coverage is available while the iPhone 4 requires that you be within range of a Wi-Fi connection due to their slower 3G network.

Both phones come with their own photo management software and really offer similar capabilities in this regard, so the big decision, if the camera is a major selling point for you, will be which phone better fits your lifestyle and media needs. It appears the iPhone 4 offers slight advantages for video coupled with their higher and better resolution screen may edge out the HTC EVO but then again the EVO offers a higher megapixel rating and again makes use of a larger screen to line up and shoot the photos. What you use the camera for most should really dictate this portion of the purchase.

Operating System

There is obviously a huge difference between the two operating systems each platform offers. Apple offers it’s home spun iPhone OS 4 and the HTC EVO makes use of the Android 2.1 OS currently and will later take advantage of the Android 2.2 OS when it is released later this year. Unfortunately, with respect to operating systems, there are just too many differences and features to outline in this article. However, the most notable difference that to this point has been a major advantage for Android based phones are their ability to support multitasking. With the new iPhone OS 4 now enabling this capability it levels the playing field for this facet and takes away this definitive advantage.

For full details on each of the two operating system offerings please visit their corresponding websites:

iPhone OS 4

Android

Sensors

Both phones offer accelerometers, nothing new there, however the iPhone 4 has introduced a new three-axis gyro which will allow for it to more precisely detect user movements and motion. Additionally both phones offer a proximity sensor (near the ear-piece, available in the iPhone 3GS as well) and an ambient light sensor (most likely for the LED Flash for the cameras). The HTC EVO does not offer the three-axis gyro however. This most likely will not be distinguishable for most unless you are a gaming intensive user that really wants to take advantage of the motion sensing technologies. In which case the iPhone 4 may be the better option anyway given its vastly larger app store and game offerings.

Processor

Apple again went the extra mile and designed their own new proprietary A4 chip which is not only supposedly faster than the 1GHz Snapdragon processor that the HTC EVO offers, but provides less strain on the battery which means it saves more power so that their larger battery lasts even longer. This can not yet be confirmed as the A4 chip has not been tested in the wild, but from preliminary reports it appears to have the advantage. We won’t know for sure on this until its release date June 28th.

Price

You’ll notice up until this point I really haven’t mentioned anything with regards to the price for the devices. The main reason for this is that, in my opinion, this won’t really be a factor. For most, if you want something badly enough you are going to pay whatever price the manufacturer is asking. But for those interested, the price for the HTC EVO is offered at $299.99 with a 2 year contract agreement with an option for a $100.00 mail in rebate. iPhone 4 will be offered at $299.99 for the 32GB device and $199.99 for the 16GB device with a 2 year contract agreement. The big difference here as mentioned previously in the article is that for he $300 price tag on the HTC EVO you are only getting a 1GB internal memory. Also included with the phone comes a 8GB microSD card bringing the total available memory up to 9GB for the device. However, users will be able to purchase an additional microSD card (up to 32GB) if you want further storage.

Flash Support and Other Advantages

Until recently this hasn’t been a huge issue, but with Apple making it apparent that there is no future for Flash in their devices and that they will be adhering to the HTML 5 standards, it has become a huge advantage for the Android powered smartphones. Apple has stated very blatantly that they feel HTML 5 will be the new standard for media rich web applications and that this “open” standard should be followed and that Flash has no place on the web. While this may or may not be the case, with many websites and applications taking advantage of Flash, the HTC EVO definitely has a major advantage with its support for Flash 4.0. Enabling its users to take advantage of existing web applications and sites that make use of Flash will certainly appeal to not only users but developers already using Flash on their sites and applications as well. In the future, if Flash does go away, this may not be as big of an advantage but for the time being, it certainly appears that it may be a decisive factor for many and gives the HTC EVO the edge.

Another advantage that the HTC EVO has is its coupling with many of Google’s features and their direct integration. Since Google isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and has been making huge strides with its mobile operating system Android any phones that are making use of this OS will have a huge advantage in their partnership with the mega giant. It allows for separation of focus and allows hardware developers to focus on the phone itself while Google focus’s on the OS that will run them. For Apple, they have taken on the burden of supporting both hardware and software and may slow them down as may be an indication by their relatively late release of the iPhone 4. This delay in release has allowed for Android powered phones to make strides in breaking off market share that Apple previously dominated.

In addition, the HTC EVO offers a HDMI out port so that users can directly stream their videos and pictures to devices that accept the video and picture formats. A distinct advantage over the iPhone 4 which has no comparable option.

As always, if you enjoyed this article and comparison please consider “liking” or sharing this article and also, if you have heard, or have something to say about either of the two models, please comment below because we’d love to hear from you.

Yet even more casual random DROID games for you to enjoy in round two of our rundown. These games are sure to help you tick away the moments that make up a dull day and who knows, if your not careful, you may even just have some fun too! Give them a whirl….

Our Recommended List of Casual/Random DROID games(Part 2)

Pocket Empires Online

In this game that is similar to other massively mobile online games like Age of Empires, the Pocket Empires Online DROID game will have you raise a building, harvest crops, do research on things etc. As you progress further in the game you will move out further and further on the map to conquer monsters and other towns to help add to your small empire. A big portion of this game is the time it takes for things to happen. If you are an instant gratification person, this game will not be for you as it will take you time to develop not only the skills in the game, but the ability within the game play as well.

Colorix HD

If you liked Tetris then this will float your boat. The Colorix HD Android game has solid and swirled colored marbles instead of blocks as in other games. Your objective will be to line up at least three in a row from any direction to clear them from your screen as more are falling from the top. It’s really nice to be able to do this game on a touch screen for one thing but it also allows you to change up the sequences that you can use to clear the marbles off instead of the normal three ones(horizontal, diagonal, vertical) like rainbow, V, and stair shapes to name a few options.

Bonsai Blast

In this action puzzle style Android game, Bonsai Blast gives you multiple different maze style playing boards to compete on. Your goal will be to stop a chain of multi colored balls from reaching the end of the tunneled maze board(the end is a Yin Yang symbol) by breaking the chain of all the colored balls in the string. Each time 3 consecutive colored balls are matched up, they break off and shorten the line. You get a gun to fire a new colored ball at the line on each shot so that you can break the chain, but you will need to pay close attention to which color you are firing, and where in the string you need to add that color to help you. Definitely keeps you entertained.

Hangman

This is a game that almost everyone remembers playing at one point or another in their lifetime. The Hangman DROID game gives you a great way to burn a few minutes with a brain teasing puzzle of letters ands words. You must guess the word before the hanging process takes place. You have multiple different categories to choose from so that you will know some and have more trouble with others, plus their are levels of difficulty to pick as well. When you finally guess the word, you can get more info on them with Wiki help or with the map functions also.

Zebra Paint

One of the best ways to keep your children busy, and maybe yourself to in your spare time, the Zebra Paint DROID game will let you use your fingers to paint images on your smartphone screen. There are a number of different templates to choose from or start one from scratch. Choose your color from the list of quite a few different colors that are available to use and then use your finger to touch paint either your own picture or one of the images from the templates.

Rock Out Acoustic Pro

Although the terms “rock out” and “acoustic” don’t necessarily go together, you can still have a pretty good time playing your own music on the Rock Out Acoustic Pro DROID game. You can make lifelike guitar sounds virtually on your phone and choose from over fifty different chords to play and even a tremolo effect so that you can put together some of your own music to “rock out” with….acoustically that is.

Hopefully we were able to give you at least one new game that you can enjoy from this or our first casual random DROID games list that we put out.
Our Recommended List of Casual Random DROID games(Part 1)

Flight Director

Ever wanted to see what it was like to be an air traffic controller? With the Flight Director DROID game you can get a taste of it without the stress and fear of having hundreds of lives in your hands. Google Earth supplies real maps for the airports that you will be traffic into. You are the one who plans out the route that each individual plane will be using to land safely.

Toss It

A lot of people love to take wadded up pieces of paper and shoot or toss them at the nearest trash can they can find trying to make it in. With the Toss It Android game you can take as many shots as you want at a wastebasket with a wad of paper. There is a fan that blows from either side of the trash can though and you will have to adjust your toss to make up for it each time. The fan will blow harder as you get to higher levels as well. The goal is to make as many as you can in a row and then submit the score online to try and hold the record against thousands of other users

My Paper Plane

Think you can make great paper airplanes? Would you fly in one if you could? Well you can now with the My Paper Plane DROID game you will be the pilot of a 3D paper plane and will need to safely guide that plane through a board filled with obstacles. Their are bonuses that can help you to get altitude and acceleration so you can fly for longer without crashing as well. Steer your plane by tilting your phone left and right. Fly for as long and far as you can to get the most points.

Abduction:World Attack

You are a cow and all of the rest of your herd have been sucked up by alien tractor beams to their space ships, along with huge patches of the earth as well. You will need to jump higher and higher up the floating earth patches to try and get to the space ships and rescue your animal friends. The game controls very well and there are bonuses that you can unlock for completing challenges and certain levels too.

ThrottleCopter

Flying games come in all sorts now a days. The ThrottleCopter DROID game is extremely simple, yet very addicting to play. You need to control your helicopter through many different levels from hitting any objects on your screen. Simple as that. This is not a game to struggle through challenges and fight enemies to survive, it’s a game of quite simply flying your helicopter better than anyone has before.

Comparisons of the iPhone 4 and DROID Incredible

With the iPhone 4 now being officially released, the real question on everyone’s mind is, “How is it going to stack up against the currently superior DROID Incredible?” Well, we finally have that answer, and it looks like Apple has done it again. The new iPhone 4 packs quite a punch especially considering many of it’s features are not only comparably better than that of the DROID Incredible but also outside the realm of possibilities for the DROID Incredible due to Apple’s proprietary software and hardware. This isn’t to say that the iPhone 4 is better in every aspect however, there are many features that the DROID Incredible still offers that the iPhone simply can’t match. Even so, it’s been a hard fought battle up to this point for about the past year with regards to market share, but with this new release I see nothing short of a landslide victory in the coming months. The real competition that the iPhone 4 will now face is the HTC EVO. If you’d like to read our comparison on these two devices check out our iPhone 4 vs HTC EVO 4G article.

The main selling point for the DROID and DROID Inredible up until this point has been it’s ability to multitask, coupled with a huge advertising and marketing campaign to outline the differences between the iPhone 3GS and DROID. This worked very well and the DROID did appear to gain considerable market share during this period, but with the new iPhone OS 4 operating system allowing for multitasking, it hardly makes the DROID Incredible seem to be so incredible anymore. Especially when you consider the app differential between the two platforms. Currently Apple outnumbers Android ~215,000 apps to 70,000 apps. This is a huge margin and is one of the main selling points for most buyers. However, for those of you probably reading this article, it’s going to take a little more than just a couple numbers on the apps and operating system abilities to win you over, so we’ve compiled a detailed comparison of the main features and selling points of each platform below. We hope you enjoy!

Cosmetics

Apple is of course known for their sleek designs and the iPhone 4 isn’t going to be the exception. The new phone comes with a stainless steel band that couples as the iPhone 4 antenna is engineered to be 4 times stronger than steel and allows for the extra thin and rigid design. In addition to the stainless steel band, both the front and back are made with engineered aluminosilcate glass (the same stuff used in high speed trains and helicopters). The glass is designed to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times stronger than plastic. Also it’s extremely durable. In comparison, the DROID Incredible… well… it’s plastic. No comparison needed here, the iPhone has much more curb appeal.

Size and Weight (Dimensions)

The new iPhone 4 weighs in at 4.8 ounces (137 grams) and measures 4.5 inches (H) by 2.31 inches (W) by 0.37 inches (D). The DROID Incredible comparably weighs in 4.59 ouches (130 grams) and measures 4.63 inches (H) by 2.3 inches (W) by 0.47 inches (D). As you can see the differences here aren’t that astonishing. The iPhone 4 dimensions differ really only in depth, and is considerably thinner than that of the DROID incredible. This is as a result of many of the internal factors that Apple painstakingly designed in to fit perfectly in their new glass metallic casing. However, for most consumers, this really won’t be a factor when considering which device to purchase.

Cellular and Wireless

As expected the iPhone 4 will continue it’s relationship with AT&T and will operate on their GSM/EDGE Network while the DROID Incredible operates on the Verizon/ Alltel network using the Dual Band CDMA 2000 capabilities that they offer. For a more in depth analysis of the two networks and the differences they both afford check out our AT&T vs Verizon Network Comparison article.

As for wireless capabilities both the iPhone 4 and DROID Incredible offer 802.11 b/g/n. Additionally each also offer Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and I believe the new iPhone 4 is going to offer wireless tethering via the OS 4 release which will allow for automatic syncing much like the MacBook’s and other current Apple devices.

By far, one of the biggest complaints with the current iPhone 3GS has been its cellular carrier, AT&T. For most, this may be the deciding factor in which phone to purchase, but AT&T has made promises to beef up it’s network and fix the problems that many users currently complain about such as dropped calls, or limited 3G coverage. Though these promises have been made, they have yet to be seen, so at this point it appears that if users are to go with the iPhone 4 they are going to have to deal with the existing network problems that most are encountering now.

Location Services

The iPhone 3GS previously offered maps and directions via Google Maps through a proprietary app, but with the release of the iPhone 4 they will now have assisted GPS and also their all important standard “digital compass,” which, in my opinion is probably the most useless item on the entire phone. Also, as before the location services will be performed via wi-fi and cellular triangulation services. As for the DROID Incredible, they will be offering Google Maps with Navigation, which has been offered on the previous DROID versions as well. There is not a huge difference here either but it would appear that the Android compatible DROID Incredible may have slightly better offerings as it is coupled directly with Googles navigation services and their support will be a decisive advantage for not only the DROID Incredible but all phones taking advantage of the Android OS.

Power and Battery

The iPhone 4 will come equipped with a built in rechargeable lithium ion battery. The battery can be recharged via USB connection to a computer or the standard power adapter unit. The DROID Incredible also comes equipped with a rechargeable lithium ion battery that can be charged in the same way. The big difference you’ll see here is that the DROID Incredible battery is removable and therefore exchangeable in the event one battery goes out and you have a secondary. This shouldn’t really be a huge concern unless you plan on going on a camping trip or somewhere where you are likely to not have access to a power grid. In which case, I doubt you are going to need your cell phone anyway.

With regards to talk time, standby and usage times. The iPhone 4 has the major advantage of being second to the shelf and could therefore beef up their battery to outlast the DROID Incredible. The iPhone 4 offers a whopping 7 hours of talk time on 3G and 14 hours on 2G with standby time of up to 300 hours. In terms of internet usage, that means you can surf comfortably for around 6 hours on 3G and 10 hours via a Wi-Fi connection. For those video and audio hungry users, you can enjoy up to 10 hours of video playback and 40 hours of your favorite music.

In comparison, the DROID Incredible offers around 312 minutes of usage time with 146 hours of standby via their provided specs on Verizon.com. Not nearly a match for the far more advanced and larger iPhone 4 battery. For most users who plug in their device every night anyway, this doesn’t become a huge issue. For the power hungry and media intensive users however, the iPhone 4 may be the best option.

Capacity (Memory and Storage)

Although the new iPhone 4 was expected to provide up to 64GB of internal memory, the actual spec came out to be the same as the iPhone 3GS upscale model at 32GB of total internal memory. They also offer a 16GB version much like was previously offered when the 3GS entered the market. By comparison the DROID Incredible offers a only 8GB of internal memory with expansion capability of up to 16 GB via a mircoSD card for a total 24GB of storage. This may not seem like an overly large difference until you consider the fact that you cannot store apps on the 16GB of external memory. (See our iPhone DROID Hardware Comparison article for more details.)

With regards to memory, if you plan on downloading large numbers of apps, the iPhone 4 may be the better option, however if most of your memory usage will be for photos, video, and music the DROID Incredible may offer a substantially better option because users would be able to swap microSD cards for each of the above mediums depending on what they needed at the time. For most users, either option, the iPhone 4 or DROID Incredible will offer more than enough for everyday usage to satisfy your needs.

Display

Now is where we really start to notice some BIG differences. Up until this point, the two phones have been relatively well compared with minimal differences here and there, but Apple really went the extra mile with their new display. The retina display that they offer has a huge 960 x 640 pixel resolution with 326 ppi. The DROID Incredibe… 800 x 480. And while the DROID Incredible display is slightly larger at 3.7 inches compared to 3.5 inches, this just makes the pixel resolution all that much more noticeable. If you really want to see the details, the iPhone 4 is going to be the best option by far, especially when we compare the two devices camera’s below.

In addition to the better pixel ratio’s the iPhone 4 also offers a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating on not only the front screen, but the back of the device as well. The contrast for the device is also significantly better at 800:1.

The DROID Incredible offers a slightly better 8-megapixel backside camera that also supports autofocus and video recording with a dual LED flash. However, the DROID Incredible does not support 720p video recording which may be a significant selling point for some.

Additionally, the iPhone 4 went even further by offering a new front side camera (1.3-megapixel) that allows users to take part in live video chatting anywhere a Wi-Fi connection can be found. This is a major advancement not only for the iPhone but for smartphones and society abound. Look forward to this becoming the norm in most smartphone devices coming out this year and next.

Both phones come with their own photo management software and really offer similar capabilities in this regard, so the big decision, if the camera is a major selling point for you, will be which phone better fits your lifestyle and media needs. It appears the iPhone 4 offers slight advantages and coupled with their higher and better resolution screen may edge out the DROID Incredible. The main advantage here is obviously the front side camera and ability to video conference, though this may not be a big deal for most.

Operating System

There is obviously a huge difference between the two operating systems that each platform offers. Apple offers it’s home spun iPhone OS 4 and the DROID Incredible make use of the Android 2.1 OS currently and will later take advantage of the Android 2.2 OS when it is released later this year. Unfortunately, with respect to operating systems, there are just too many differences and features to outline in this article. However, the most notable difference that to this point has put DROID in the running has been its ability to support multitasking. With the new iPhone OS 4 now enabling this capability it levels the playing field for this facet and takes away the DROID Incredible’s definitive advantage.

Sensors

Both phones offer accelerometers, nothing new there, however the iPhone 4 has introduced a new three-axis gyro which will allow for it to more precisely detect user movements and motion. Additionally both phones offer a proximity sensor (near the ear-piece, available in the iPhone 3GS as well) and an ambient light sensor (most likely for the LED Flash for the camera). The DROID Incredible does not offer the three-axis gyro however. This most likely will not be distinguishable for most unless you are a gaming intensive user that really wants to take advantage of the motion sensing technologies. In which case the iPhone 4 may be the better option anyway given its vastly larger app store and game offerings.

Processor

Apple again went the extra mile and designed their own new proprietary A4 chip which is not only faster than the 1GHz Qualcomm processor that the DROID Incredible offers, but provides less strain on the battery which means it saves more power so that their larger battery lasts even longer.

Price

You’ll notice up until this point I really haven’t mentioned anything with regards to the price for the devices. The main reason for this is that, in my opinion, this won’t really be a factor. For most, if you want something badly enough you are going to pay whatever price the manufacturer is asking. But for those interested, the price for the DROID Incredible is offered at $199.99 with a 2 year contract agreement and the iPhone 4 will be offered at 299.99 for the 32GB device and 199.99 for the 16GB device with a 2 year contract agreement.

Ok, so obviously this article may seem a bit biased towards the iPhone in some respects, so I’m going to take a minute now to make sure an outline some of the features that are advantageous for the DROID Incredible. The main one, which has been under hot debate as of recent, is the support for Flash. The iPhone 4 does not, and does not intend to support Flash now or in the future. They fully feel that the web should be “open” and HTML 5 should be the new standard to follow. This may be the case, however with many websites and applications taking advantage of Flash, the DROID Incredible definitely has a major advantage in supporting Flash 4.0 and enabling its users to take advantage of existing web applications and sites that make use of Flash. In the future, if Flash does go away, this may not be as big of an advantage but for the time being, it certainly appears that it may be a decisive factor for many and gives the DROID Incredible a huge advantage.

Another advantage that the HTC DROID Incredible has is its coupling with many of Google’s features and their direct integration.

So with all that said and done, it’s all really going to come down to user preference and what you want, but I know my preference most certainly lies with the iPhone and I’ll be looking forward to picking one up as soon as they are available on the 28th. As always, if you enjoyed this article and comparison please consider “liking” or sharing this article and also, if you have heard, or have something to say about either of the two models, please comment below because we’d love to hear from you.
